‘Joy of Tech’ Comic Mentions Chrome OS

(CHROMEOSZONE.COM) — It didn’t take long for the comics to mention Google OS and its adversaries.  Courtesy of Joy of Tech, we have a comic by by Nitrozac & Snaggy poking fun at the big two Operating Systems: Microsoft and Apple.  This is a nice little comic displaying how both Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows might be reacting to the Google Chrome OS hoopla.  For now, I’m sure the big players are taking Chrome OS with a grain of salt considering Android hasn’t made much of an impact against the iPhone or Blackberry.

Microsoft CEO Ballmer Mocks Chrome OS

(CHROMEOSZONE) — Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer addressed an audience today in an onstage question-and-answer session at a conference for Microsoft’s technology partners in New Orleans.
Regarding having both Chrome OS aimed at Netbooks and Android for mobile smartphones, in a jovial tone Ballmer stated, “I don’t know if they can’t make up their mind or what the problem is over there, but the last time I checked, you don’t need two client operating systems.”  ”It’s good to have one,” Ballmer added when noting the experience of having both Windows NT and Windows 95/98 in the previous decade.
For the meantime, Ballmer said Microsoft’s advertising strategy will continue to target Apple adding, “We’re going to continue to tell the story of the PC.”

Chrome OS Targets Exploding Netbook Niche

So, what is to be gained by the announcement of the Google Chrome OS?  It was just 10 months ago that Google announced the browser, Google Chrome.  It was said at the time they didn’t want to takeover the market, they just needed a platform to develop their google application suite and hoped it would lead to innovation among the browser market as a whole. Since then, the browser market has caught on.  Microsoft launched IE 8.0 from beta and Mozilla Firefox is now on verison 3.5 with its own built in private browsing.
In comes Google which has picked a great niche market, the Netbooks.  In the 4th Quarter 2008, it was reported that Netbooks outsold iPhones for the first time.  Although Netbooks are an expoding market, even Apple spokeperson at the last 2 conference calls stated that Apple doesn’t wish to dive into the low powered market meaning low end computing.
Google is web driven and apparently, Google engineers would like the Chrome operating system will allow for running programs written for the Web, not for the OS itself.  The Chrome OS is targetted for release in the second half of 2010.

Welcome to Chrome OS Zone!

2009-07-08-welcome-to-chromeoszone(CHROMEOSZONE.COM) —As of this writing, Google Chrome OS is not a household name but it will be in the coming year as the new Operating System for Netbooks is released.

Why this site?  I got wind of the new Google Chrome OS as I was driving to  work and listening to the Los Angeles AM news radio 1070.  It sounded exciting, and a direct assult on Microsoft.

As I was trying to come up with good names for the domain, my primary choices were taken but for some reason, the name CHROMOSOME just popped into my head and thus, CHROMEOSZONE.COM was born.  I couldn’t believe it was still available.
